Union I

To the Editors of the Crimson:

I recently came to work at Harvard and quickly became a supporter of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers (HUCTW). I was drawn to the union and remain committed to HUCTW because of its ongoing efforts to include as many employees as possible in building our organization and negotiating our contract.

My faith in HUCTW was reinforced by the union's election last week of representatives to pre-negotiation discussion sessions with the University. Every union member was able to cast a ballot in the election, and more than 30 employees from across the campus ran for the positions.

The week of the election, my organizer met with me and explained that I would not be able to vote myself, as I had begun working after last spring's election and had not yet had an opportunity to sign a membership card.

I didn't feel upset about not being able to vote in this one election-I signed a union card today and will cast a ballot for the negotiating committee that will shape our contract and later for the leadership that will guide our union. Barry Glunt   Harvard Medical School
