The Crimson's recent series of articles on Expository Writing distorts my views as well as those of several others who were interviewed. The program's teaching effectiveness and the efforts, both past and current, to strengthen the program further have been systematically overlooked or played down. The Crimson has incorrectly interpreted judicious reserve on the part of a number of those interviewed as a sign of inaction or apathy.
The fact is that all of the really substantive issues of policy and pedagogy raised in the series of Crimson articles were in the process of being reviewed and addressed well before the articles appeared. I have been and remain committed to the goal of ensuring for Harvard students superior instruction in writing not only in Expository Writing courses alone but also throughout the undergraduate curriculum. Lawrence Buell Dean for Undergraduate Education
