Coverage of Soka University Was Inaccurate

TO THE EDITORS OF THE CRIMSON:

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Your coverage of Harvard's ties with Soka University, which is trying to build a large campus in the Santa Monica Mountains National Park, is seriously inaccurate.

1. Your article failed to describe Harvard's ties with Soka, a Japan-based religious organization whose current "curriculum" consists of English-as-a-second-language courses to Japanese nationals.

2. I never said that Soka uses the Harvard logo. I did say Soka uses the Harvard connection in all its public relations to overcome an image tarnished by scandals in Japan.

3. The Soka development proposed is opposed by every environmental group in California, by the U.S. National Park Service and Bruce Babbitt, by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, and by US Congress members like Anthony Beilenson, Howard Berman and Henry Waxman. Your story made no mention of this opposition.

Harvard should not let its prestigious reputation be used to enhance the image of this particular land developer. Tom Hayden   California State Senator   Twenty-third District
