Fitzsimmons Opts Out of Dean Race

By Jonathan A. Lewin

Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid William R. Fitzsimmons '67 said last week that he is not a candidate to replace Dean of the College L. Fred Jewett '57, who will step down next year.

Fitzsimmons was widely considered a leading candidate for the Job, which opens up in July 1995. The position of admissions dean has been a stepping-stone to Dean of the College before--Jewett and Fred L. Glimp '50 were both deans of admissions before becoming deans of the College.

"I am very happy where I am," Fitzsimmons said. "I anticipate staying here for some time."

Fitzsimmons' accomplishments in the admissions office include the continuation of the need-blind admissions policy Jewett helped implement, institution of vigorous minority recruiting and boosting the number of minority admits to record highs.

With Fitzsimmons out of the race, internal candidates for Jewett's position may include Associate Dean of the College Thomas A. Dingman '67, Dean of Freshmen Elizabeth S. Nathans and Dean of Students Archie C. Epps III.

Nathans said last week that she was "very flattered by the notion" that she may be a candidate.

"But it would be very inappropriate," she added. "There are so many other people who have been at Harvard far longer than I and are far more qualified to be dean of the college."

Nathans came to Harvard form Duke in July 1992.

Dingman said that he had no comment on whether he could be considered a possible successor to Jewett.

"It would be premature to speculate," said Dingman, who has been associate dean of the College for seven years and the senior tutor of Dudley House for three.

Epps, who has seen five deans of the college come and go during his tenure, was a leading contender both in 1985, When Jewett was given the job, and in 1976.

Changing Job Description

Dingman said the Committee to Review the College, Chaired by Gor- don McKay Professor of Computer Science HarryR. Lewis '68 and Administrative Dean of theFaculty Nancy L. Maull could provide "A verydifferent job description for the dean."

Lewis said the committee was investigating thestructure and organization of the College.

"We're doing a review of the structure of thecollege and that includes the dean's office andeverything underneath it," he said.

Lewis said he does not yet know how long itwill be until the committee issues its report.

Maull declined to comment on Whether thecommittee would suggest changes to the position ofthe dean o the college, but said she hoped itwould present its findings this summer.

Jeremy R. Knowles, dean of the faculty, convened the committee, which has been meetingsince last October, and will "do what he wants"with its findings, Maull said
