Phi Beta Kappa Will Induct 106 Members

Chapters Will Include 10 Percent of Seniors

By Elizabeth T. Bangs

The Alpha and Iota Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa will induct 64 men and 42 women today in the final round of elections for the Class of 1995. Today's ceremonies will bring membership in the College's two chapters up to 10 percent of the senior class.

"I would say the award is a way of acknowledging my hard work," said Stephanie M. Hui '95, a biology concentrator in Quincy House. "It's certainly a very wonderful prize to have at the end."

Both chapters elect new members in three installments. The Alpha Chapter elected 12 men of the Class of 1995 at the end of last year, 24 at the beginning of this year and 64 this spring. The Iota Chapter elected 12 women at the end of last year, 20 at the beginning of this year and 42 this spring.

Current Phi Beta Kappa members are eligible to elect new members, a process which includes an examination of transcripts, activities and letters of recommendation. The bottom GPA cutoff for men this spring was roughly 13.9 according to member Rajath Shourie '95, who is a Crimson editor.

"Some peers were on the selection committee. Actually one of the women on the selection committee who's been on Phi Beta Kappa since junior year hand delivered the acceptance letter," said Bianca Hovey '95, a physics concentrator in Cabot House. "She was proud of me. To have a feeling that your peers are proud of you too is very special."

Many of those to be inducted today said theyhadn't realized Phi Beta Kappa was still electingnew members of the senior class this spring.

"I sort of had it as a nice thing to havehappen...in the back of my mind. I didn't knowwhat my chances were," said Theodore W. Hong '95,a chemistry and physics concentrator in NorthHouse. "It's a pleasant surprise. It's hard totell how you stand in relation to other people inthe class."

Some students were less excited about beingnamed to Phi Beta Kappa than others.

"It's one of those things that's a piece ofpaper or a title, something to add to yourresume," said James C. Murray, a governmentconcentrator in Leverett.

"It's not an activity. It doesn't provide forany kind of association," said Murray, who willstudy in Britain next year.

But Hui said it's the academic nature of thehonor that makes it exciting for her.

"Because I'm going into investment banking thishelps to acknowledge achieving something that ismore scholarly rather than more practical," saidHui, who will work for Goldman Sachs next year.

Hovey had hoped to be elected to the IotaChapter because her older sister had been a memberof Phi Beta Kappa.

"I thought it would be nice to follow in herfootsteps," said Hovey, who will go to graduateschool in biochemistry at the University ofWashington next year.

"Once I was invited I kind of wanted it. Ithought it would be nice if both of us got it,"she said.
