Harvard To Award 5,647 Degrees

President Neil L. Rudenstine will confer a total of 5,647 diplomas during today's 348th Commencement exercises.

The National Weather Service predicts a cloudy sky for the morning ceremonies, becoming partly sunny by the afternoon with a high temperature near 70 and no precipitation.

Of those degrees, 1,559 will be awarded to undergraduates by the College, according to Senior Associate Registrar Thurston A. Smith.

At today's lunchtime ceremonies in the residential Houses, 1,550 bachelor of arts degrees (A.B.) will be awarded, and nine bachelor of science degrees (S.B.s), all in engineering sciences.

Of this year's bachelor's degree recipients, 822 are male and 737 female.

Eighty-four students will graduate summa cum laude and 516 magna cum laude. Four hundred and forty-three will graduate cum laude in a field of concentration and cum laude general studies degrees to 353. Non-honors degrees will be given to 162 students.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will award 258 doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.), 205 master of arts (A.M.) and 30 master of science (A.S.) degrees in Sanders Theatre.

And just up Garden Street in Radcliffe Yard, the Graduate School of Education will confer 581 master of education (Ed.M.) and 47 doctor of education (Ed.D.) degrees and eight certificates of advanced study.

In front of the Business School's Aldrich Hall, 894 students will receive a masters' degree in business administration (M.B.A.) and four a doctorate in business administration (D.B.A.).

The Law School will graduate 554 doctors of law (J.D.), 151 masters of law (L.L.M.), and five doctors of juridical science (S.J.D.) at its exercises in Holmes Field.

Pending last-minute changes, yesterday morning 460 Kennedy School of Government students were scheduled to receive degrees, according to the registrar's office. Two hundred and six will receive a one-year master of public administration (M.P.A.) degree, 201 will receive master of public policy (M.P.P.) degrees, 50 will receive two-year M.P.A. degrees and three will receive masters in public policy and urban planning degrees.

On the front lawn of Andover Hall, the Divinity School will confer 116 master of theological studies (M.T.S.) degrees, 54 master of divinity (M.Div.) degrees, seven master of theology (Th.M.) and three doctor of theology (Th.D.) degrees.

Across the river on the Medical School's Longwood Campus, 175 students will receive doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees and eight master of medical sciences (M.M.Sc.), accord- ing to Registrar Carol A. Duffey.

The Graduate School of Design will award 51master of architecture (M.Arch.) degrees, 38master of landscape architecture (M.L.A.) degrees,33 master of design studies (M.D.S.) degrees, 23master of architecture in urban design (M.A.U.D.)degrees, 13 master of urban planning (M.U.P.)degrees, two master of landscape architecture inurban design (M.L.A.U.D.) degrees and two doctorof design (D.D.) degrees.

At the School of Public Health, 142 master ofpublic health (M.P.H.) degrees, 131 master ofscience (M.S.) degrees, 37 doctor of science(D.S.) degrees and seven doctor of public health(D.P.H.) degrees will be conferred.

The School of Dental Medicine will award 33clinical specialty certificates and 30 doctor ofdental medicine (D.M.D.) degrees, nine master ofmedical sciences in oral biology (M.M.Sc.) degreesand seven doctor of medical sciences in oralbiology (D.M.Sc.) degrees
